Opportunity Score

A single score from zero to one hundred per topic that measures how open the AI citation door is right now.

Opportunity Score asks all four AI engines a topic's question, measures whether they cite anyone and how strong that source is, and compresses the result into one number from zero to one hundred. Higher means the citation door is more open.

How it works

For every topic, Ranko asks the question to ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Gemini as a real user would. For each response it checks two things: whether the engine cited anyone at all, and if so whether the source is strong or weak, weighed by domain authority, content depth, and how often that source appears across your tracked topics. An answer with no citation counts as a wide open door, a weak citation as a door you can push through, and a strong citation as a closed door for now. The per engine measurements average into one topic score. Sort the topic list by score to prioritise what to publish next.

Key capabilities

  • Live question probing across ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Gemini.
  • No citation detection, weighted heavily as the highest leverage opportunity.
  • Weak citation detection based on domain authority, content depth, and citation frequency.
  • A single zero to one hundred score per topic, sortable and comparable.
  • Regular refresh: daily for hot topics, weekly for evergreen topics, with visible timestamps.
  • A clickable breakdown showing per engine scores, citation outcomes, and cited competitor sources.
  • Suite-wide use as the prioritisation currency for Topic Planner, Topic Clusters, and Competitor Tracking.

Tips

Opportunity Score measures the topic. To check whether a specific draft will win that topic, run it through the AI Mention Simulator. Many teams use both together.
